How do you measure up?

Mothers are placed on a pedestal in our society. We are seen as the most caring, the most compassionate, the most giving. We are often viewed as self-sacrificing and altruistic. Mothers are expected to make decisions that are in the best interest of their children, their family, and last but not least, themselves. Society's current view of motherhood leaves little room for deviation from this. But, what if you are a mother and you have interests outside of your child(ren)? Is it ok to want to spend time away from kids? Are you a better mom if you can leave your child overnight? Or, are you an even better mom if you only feel comfortable leaving your kid for a few hours (or not at all)?
